Tuesday September 11th 2018 marked 17 years since the 9/11 attacks on the United States. To mark the anniversary, SINCE 9/11 invited leaders and professionals from a variety of fields to a breakfast event at Bloomberg’s European Headquarters to announce that almost two decades on from the tragedy that would change the course of history, SINCE 9/11 had once again partnered with the world-acclaimed UCL Institute of Education to create a new Primary Education Programme.
The resources, designed for Key Stage 2 are there to help promote the Fundamental British Values of Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect and Tolerance for Different Faiths and Beliefs in the classroom.
Speaking at the event, Sara Khan, Lead Commissioner for Countering Extremism, said:
“The role of education in building resilience to extremism is critical. I welcome this resource and the valuable work of Since 9/11 in supporting schools to promote critical principles and values including democracy, diversity and non-discrimination; such values are the very opposite of what extremists often advocate.”
Also speaking at the event was Peter Neumann, renowned expert on radicalisation and founding director of the International Centre for Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) – Kings College London, with opening remarks from Robert Wood Johnson, Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Kingdom.

Charity Director, Liam Duffy, explained the logic behind the resources:
“17 years on from the devastation of the September 11th terrorist attacks we are launching teaching resources designed to foster the values and freedoms we enjoy in modern democratic Britain – the very values which extremists of all stripes seek to undermine. By teaching the values contained in this programme, we can help to foster a generation which is ready to reject extremism and build a more cohesive society for us all.”
Through our education programme we aim to build a more tolerant future and a legacy of hope from the tragedy of 9/11.
